Hello everyone. I’m back with another episode of my climb back to 225 after being out of the field for years. Back in 1998 there was absolutely nothing to do but to go to school because there was no schools on the internet, at least as far as I know of.
How times have changed. Not only can you go to school online now for Court Reporting, but if you are like me and need to just build speed to return to work there’s a few of them that are really good like EV360Ultimate.com. Which I have not tried yet but I am certainly going to after Christmas. So look forward to that blog.
What has really caught my eye and maybe yours too is Plover. What a wonderful program that they have put together for hackers to write faster using stenography. If you haven’t heard about it, check out the stenoknightplover.com or Open Source.com. They have created software that allows you to hook up your machine to your laptop and write in real time.. Yes, I said real time. You can see your raw steno notes or your English translation. I’m currently building my library which is another awesome feature they have. I’m still in awe of this program and I’m so glad someone is trying to offer an alternative to all those pricey software systems that all court reporters must have to do their job properly.
That’s not all they have done to help this profession. They also have Stenotray which is a software system where you can write your steno notes into. I’m still playing around with this one to see if it’s something I would like to use repeatedly. But there are drills, and lots of practice although I find it doesn’t read my strokes sometimes and I end up having to stroke some of the words several times for the application to move on to the next word. Nonetheless, it is still a great product. I may need to make a slight adjustment to my keys to make it work better. Try it out for yourself and see if you like it.
Last but not least is the Steno Arcade which is a game to play on you machine and like most games these days it’s fun to play and learn something at the same time. I’m not sure if they have put this game out yet but you can get more information on it at the websites above. You can become a member and get involved, donate, or keep abreast with the other tools they will be releasing that not only help Hackers but Court Reporters can reap the benefits of these games as well. One of their groups is the The Plover Group and the other is The Plover Aviary.
I’m sure I’ll be talking about this for quite some time because they are also making a stenography machine will run about $300.00 – $500.00 total! I’ve looked at it and like it very much. So I maybe purchasing one of those as well since right now I have the SRT 400 and may need another machine at some point in the future.
Well, that’s all for today. Curious? Go check it out and let me know what you think. I believe this may change the world of Court Reporting in the future. Maybe even allowing us to do Court Reporting an a sidewinder keyboard. I like what they are doing and I hoping it takes off so I support them all the way and I’m not saying this for kickback. I think it would be great if everyone could learn steno if only just to type blogs and papers faster. Perfect for hackers and anyone who has to type data, transcripts, long speeches, or video transcribing. There are many things this could become useful to all of society.
Stenography is opening up to everyone and I think to myself it’s about time.
Hello fellow steno lovers. Just wanted to drop a quick line tonight and let you all know how much I love this site I found called Toptyper.com. I have been using it for at least two or three months and the reason I decided to make a blog about it is because I have begun to enter in my own text which is one of the great features of this site. The text I have been entering is Jury Charge so far.
As we all know, being a Court Reporter is two-fold. You must be a great stenographer and a great typist to make any decent amount of money. So I’ve found several typing courses online for free but this one beats them all. Not only can you add your own text, but you can also join a contest or create a contest. A contest is when you pick some text and you set a time frame for how long you want it to last, and then you publish it there and wala! people can now join your contest and it will show the winner at the end of the contest and where everybody scored. Awesome. Nothing like a little competition to get those fingers going and your typing speed up. Right?
I find that it is beneficial to practice typing what I eventually will be typing everyday all day any way. When I graduated back in the day we did not have this type of typing tutor around so you got to love technology. This I believe is what returning Court Reporters and students need in order to get enough practice typing what you’ll be typing out in the field. It makes perfect sense. I didn’t see any tests for Court Reporters at all when I began using it, and so the light bulb went off and now I’ll make sure at least once a week to add new material for us to practice and I’ll let you know here.
So to show you how it works if you’re not familiar with it. This link will take you to the website and to the contest which is a week long http://toptyper.com/?c=3a. It starts today 11/12/16 and will end on 11/17/16. Be joyful because there is more on the way. Any thing we can get and use for free in our profession is surely a blessing and should not be taken lightly, only with joy. Last but not least, please check out my You Tube channel for more dictation at SANDRA CLAY HUNTER. or my Facebook page, COURT REPORTERS PLUS. Thanks and keep typing on your steno machine and your keyboard. One day at a time closer to your dreams. Until next time sleep well my friend.
The reason for the title is because that’s how I’m really feeling these days. I am really trying to practice for three hours every day because I know from graduating 1998 that the more I practiced the faster I typed. I was lucky to be married and all I had to do was go to school and so practiced as much as I possibly could. Now, I’m receiving SSI on a monthly basis and I am determined to change my life so once again I can practice as much as I like.
Today I uploaded three videos on YouTube and Vimeo three videos to help others who need and crave more practice as I do. I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of lower speeds on YouTube and decided to do something about it. For those re-entering the field and not going back to school to do it and rack up more debt practicing every day is crucial. Let me mention that you won’t be able to find my videos because it takes a few days for them to load so check them out if you’d like. My channel for dictation on You Tube is under my name Sandra Clay Hunter. One Vimeo its StenoLady247 or type in practice dictation.
I was able to write at 100 wpm very well. My notes were nice and clean. So then I went to 140 wpm and it was challenging but I got about 98%. Then I did 160 and it wasn’t as clean, I’m dropping a lot and probably only got about 85% which tells me I am typing about 150 words per minuets. I think that’s great considering I haven’t worked in the field for years. It just goes to show that once you learn something you will have that for a lifetime.
So now I’m working on briefs and phrases daily so that I can write them again without any hesitation so I can work on more speed but also keep accurate. I follow the StenEd Theory so there are lots and lots of briefs that can be used and some I still remember of course.I know the only reason I remember them is because I practiced them religously until I knew them better than my own kids. Lol Here are some of the ones I’m working on now. Maybe this will help you too. Happy typing.

Hello everyone and thanks for coming to my page. Let me take the time to introduce myself and let you know why this page was created. My name is Sandra and I am a mother of three wonderful children and the only girl my mother had so I grew up with four brothers and always feeling very special.
The reason for creating this blog about stenography / court reporting is really just to have a record of my adventures in climbing my way back to my court reporting career. You see, I graduated July 6, 1996 and real-time was just coming upon the scene. I worked about six years in the field until I was burnt out and desired to do something else. After that I had worked in different fields but always knew one day I would probably return to the field.
So here I am. Ready and willing to put myself through this torture again of trying to get back to at least 200 wpm before I contact any agency to work
. After all this time has passed I’m not doing too bad at all. I bought a machine from someone who was selling a machine for $125.00 on a court reporting group on Facebook at Kim’s Court Reporting Thrift Shop and she sent me two books as well, one with jury charge and one with literary. Now I’m practicing about two hours everyday but I try to do three.
Also because I have been diagnosed with arthritis since 2007, I’m going the Social Security Pass Plan to Achievement which helps you financially get the things you need to go back to work and stop receiving SSI payments. They allow you go to school, find a job, and save money for anything that would help you go back to work, including a car, stenograph machine, etc. I sent my application to them September 11, 2016 and have my fingers crossed, but I have already decided that I will pursue this regardless of whether they help me or not; it just may take me more time and it won’t be as fast as I would prefer.
I believe in my heart that this is the occupation for me. I love stenography and although I have done other jobs in my life this is what I’m most passionate about. I remember that old saying do what you love and it won’t feel like work at all. So follow me on my journey if you like and I’m sure to make you laugh along the way.
